00:00:10
When he had completed00:00:12
00:00:12
what he had to say to the people,00:00:13
00:00:14
he entered Capernaum.00:00:16
00:00:22
Now an army officer’s slave,00:00:25
00:00:25
who was dear to him,00:00:26
00:00:28
was seriously ill and about to pass away.00:00:31
00:00:35
When he heard about Jesus,00:00:37
00:00:37
he sent some elders of the Jews to him00:00:39
00:00:46
to ask him to come and make his slave well.00:00:48
00:00:57
They came up to Jesus and began to plead00:01:00
00:01:00
with him earnestly.00:01:01
00:01:02
He is worthy of your granting him this,00:01:05
00:01:05
for he loves our nation00:01:08
00:01:08
and he himself built our synagogue.00:01:10
00:01:13
So Jesus went with them.00:01:15
00:01:20
But when he was not far from the house,00:01:23
00:01:24
the army officer had already sent friends00:01:27
00:01:27
to say to him:00:01:29
00:01:29
Sir, do not bother,00:01:32
00:01:34
for I am not worthy to have you00:01:35
00:01:35
come under my roof.00:01:37
00:01:37
That is why I did not consider myself00:01:40
00:01:40
worthy to come to you.00:01:42
00:01:42
But say the word,00:01:44
00:01:44
and let my servant be healed.00:01:46
00:01:48
For I too am a man placed under authority,00:01:50
00:01:50
having soldiers under me, . . .00:01:52
00:01:52
. . . and I say to this one,00:01:53
00:01:53
“Go!” and he goes,00:01:56
00:01:56
and to another, “Come!” and he comes, . . .00:01:59
00:02:00
. . . and to my slave,00:02:02
00:02:03
“Do this!”00:02:05
00:02:05
and he does it.00:02:08
00:02:12
When Jesus heard that,00:02:14
00:02:16
he was amazed00:02:18
00:02:19
and said to those following him:00:02:21
00:02:21
I tell you the truth,00:02:23
00:02:24
with no one in Israel have I found00:02:26
00:02:26
so great a faith.00:02:28
00:02:31
But I tell you00:02:33
00:02:33
that many from east and west will come00:02:36
00:02:36
and recline at the table00:02:37
00:02:37
with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob00:02:40
00:02:40
in the Kingdom of the heavens;00:02:42
00:02:46
whereas the sons of the Kingdom00:02:48
00:02:51
will be thrown into the darkness outside.00:02:53
00:02:53
There is where their weeping00:02:55
00:02:55
and the gnashing of their teeth will be. 00:02:57
00:03:08
Go.00:03:09
00:03:10
Just as you have shown faith,00:03:13
00:03:13
so let it come to pass for you.00:03:15
00:03:54
Master!00:03:56
00:04:12
And the servant was healed in that hour.00:04:15
00:04:22
And when those00:04:24
00:04:24
who had been sent returned to the house,00:04:25
00:04:25
they found the slave in good health.00:04:28
00:05:00
Soon afterward00:05:01
00:05:01
he traveled to a city called Nain,00:05:04
00:05:08
and his disciples00:05:09
00:05:09
and a large crowd were traveling with him.00:05:12
00:05:16
As he got near the gate of the city,00:05:18
00:05:20
why look!00:05:22
00:05:24
there was a dead man being carried out,00:05:26
00:05:28
the only son of his mother.00:05:31
00:05:31
Besides, she was a widow.00:05:34
00:05:36
A considerable crowd from the city
was also with her.00:05:40
00:05:42
When the Lord caught sight of her,00:05:45
00:05:45
he was moved with pity for her.00:05:47
00:06:01
Stop weeping.00:06:03
00:06:15
With that he approached and touched the bier,00:06:18
00:06:18
and the bearers stood still.00:06:21
00:06:39
Young man, I say to you, get up!00:06:42
00:07:12
And the dead man sat up00:07:14
00:07:14
and started to speak, . . . 00:07:17
00:07:17
What has happened?00:07:19
00:07:28
Oh, oh, oh, my boy!00:07:33
00:07:33
Oh, oh, my boy!00:07:37
00:07:48
My boy—alive!00:07:52
00:07:52
My boy—alive!00:07:54
00:08:10
. . . and Jesus gave him to his mother.00:08:12
00:08:17
Now fear seized them all,00:08:19
00:08:21
and they began to glorify God,00:08:25
00:08:25
saying: “A great prophet has been00:08:28
00:08:28
raised up among us,”00:08:31
00:08:31
and, “God has turned00:08:33
00:08:33
his attention to his people.”00:08:35
00:08:47
And this news concerning him00:08:49
00:08:49
spread out into all Judea00:08:51
00:08:51
and all the surrounding country.00:08:54
00:09:01
Now John’s disciples reported to him00:09:03
00:09:03
all these things.00:09:05
00:09:27
So John summoned two of his disciples00:09:30
00:09:32
and sent them to the Lord to ask:00:09:35
00:09:35
Are you the Coming One,00:09:37
00:09:37
or are we to expect a different one?00:09:41
00:10:44
When they came to him, the men said:00:10:47
00:10:47
John the Baptist sent us to you to ask,00:10:51
00:10:51
“Are you the Coming One,00:10:52
00:10:53
or are we to expect another?”00:10:55
00:10:57
In that hour00:10:59
00:10:59
he cured many people of sicknesses,00:11:00
00:11:05
serious diseases, and wicked spirits,00:11:10
00:11:13
and he granted many blind people00:11:15
00:11:15
the gift of sight.00:11:17
00:11:31
Go and report to John00:11:33
00:11:33
what you have seen and heard:00:11:34
00:11:35
The blind are now seeing,00:11:39
00:11:39
the lame are walking,00:11:41
00:11:41
the lepers are being cleansed,00:11:44
00:11:44
the deaf are hearing,00:11:47
00:11:48
the dead are being raised up,00:11:52
00:11:52
and the poor are being told the good news.00:11:55
00:11:59
Happy is the one00:12:01
00:12:01
who finds no cause for stumbling in me.00:12:03
00:12:35
When the messengers of John had gone away,00:12:37
00:12:38
Jesus began to speak00:12:40
00:12:40
to the crowds about John:00:12:42
00:12:45
What did you go out00:12:46
00:12:46
into the wilderness to see?00:12:47
00:12:50
A reed being tossed by the wind?00:12:52
00:12:54
What, then, did you go out to see?00:12:56
00:12:59
A man dressed in soft garments?00:13:01
00:13:02
Why, those wearing splendid dress00:13:04
00:13:04
and living in luxury00:13:06
00:13:06
are in royal houses.00:13:08
00:13:09
Really, then, what did you go out to see?00:13:13
00:13:14
A prophet?00:13:16
00:13:17
Yes, I tell you, and far more than a prophet.00:13:21
00:13:22
This is the one about whom it is written:00:13:25
00:13:26
“Look! I am sending my messenger00:13:28
00:13:28
“ahead of you,00:13:30
00:13:30
who will prepare your way ahead of you.”00:13:32
00:13:32
See, the Lamb of God.00:13:35
00:13:38
I tell you, among those born of women00:13:41
00:13:41
there is no one greater than John,00:13:44
00:13:49
but a lesser person in the Kingdom of God00:13:52
00:13:52
is greater than he is.00:13:54
00:13:56
From the days of John the Baptist 00:13:58
00:13:58
until now, the Kingdom of the heavens00:14:02
00:14:02
is the goal toward which men press,00:14:04
00:14:06
and those pressing forward are seizing it.00:14:08
00:14:10
For all,00:14:11
00:14:11
the Prophets and the Law,00:14:13
00:14:13
prophesied until John;00:14:16
00:14:16
and if you are willing to accept it, he is00:14:20
00:14:20
“Elijah who is to come.”00:14:21
00:14:25
Let the one who has ears listen.00:14:27
00:14:28
(When all the people00:14:29
00:14:29
(and the tax collectors heard this,00:14:32
00:14:32
(they declared God to be righteous,00:14:34
00:14:36
(for they had been baptized00:14:37
00:14:37
(with the baptism of John.00:14:39
00:14:42
(But the Pharisees00:14:44
00:14:44
(and those versed in the Law00:14:46
00:14:46
(disregarded the counsel of God to them,00:14:50
00:14:50
since they had not been baptized by him.)00:14:52
00:14:54
With whom will I compare this generation?00:14:57
00:14:59
It is like young children00:15:01
00:15:01
sitting in the marketplaces00:15:03
00:15:03
who call out to their playmates, saying:00:15:06
00:15:06
“We played the flute for you,00:15:09
00:15:09
“but you did not dance;00:15:11
00:15:11
“we wailed,00:15:13
00:15:13
but you did not beat yourselves in grief.”00:15:15
00:15:17
Likewise,00:15:19
00:15:19
John came neither eating nor drinking,00:15:22
00:15:23
but people say, “He has a demon.”00:15:25
00:15:27
The Son of man did come eating and drinking, 00:15:30
00:15:31
but people say, “Look!00:15:35
00:15:35
“A man who is a glutton00:15:36
00:15:36
“and is given to drinking wine,00:15:39
00:15:39
a friend of tax collectors and sinners.”00:15:42
00:15:45
All the same,00:15:46
00:15:47
wisdom is proved righteous by its works.00:15:51
00:15:54
Then he began to reproach the cities00:15:56
00:15:56
in which most of his powerful works00:15:58
00:15:58
had taken place,00:16:00
00:16:00
for they did not repent:00:16:02
00:16:02
Woe to you, Chorazin!00:16:04
00:16:04
Woe to you, Bethsaida!00:16:06
00:16:06
because if the powerful works00:16:08
00:16:08
that took place in you00:16:09
00:16:09
had taken place in Tyre and Sidon,00:16:13
00:16:13
they would long ago00:16:14
00:16:14
have repented in sackcloth and ashes.00:16:16
00:16:17
But I say to you, it will be more endurable00:16:20
00:16:20
for Tyre and Sidon on Judgment Day00:16:22
00:16:22
than for you.00:16:24
00:16:25
And you, Capernaum,00:16:26
00:16:26
will you perhaps be exalted to heaven?00:16:29
00:16:29
Down to the Grave you will come;00:16:32
00:16:32
because if the powerful works that took place in you00:16:35
00:16:35
had taken place in Sodom,00:16:37
00:16:37
it would have remained until this very day.00:16:39
00:16:40
But I say to you,00:16:42
00:16:43
it will be more endurable for the land00:16:45
00:16:45
of Sodom on Judgment Day than for you.00:16:47
00:17:17
I publicly praise you, Father,00:17:19
00:17:21
Lord of heaven and earth,00:17:23
00:17:25
because you have hidden these things00:17:28
00:17:28
from the wise and intellectual ones00:17:30
00:17:30
and have revealed them to young children.00:17:35
00:17:39
Yes, O Father,00:17:41
00:17:42
because this is the way you approved.00:17:45
00:17:51
All things00:17:53
00:17:53
have been handed over to me by my Father,00:17:55
00:17:57
and no one fully knows the Son00:17:59
00:17:59
except the Father;00:18:01
00:18:03
neither does anyone fully know the Father00:18:05
00:18:05
except the Son00:18:07
00:18:07
and anyone00:18:08
00:18:08
to whom the Son is willing to reveal him.00:18:10
00:18:14
Come to me,00:18:16
00:18:16
all you who are toiling and loaded down,00:18:20
00:18:20
and I will refresh you.00:18:22
00:18:26
Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,00:18:30
00:18:30
for I am mild-tempered and lowly in heart,00:18:33
00:18:35
and you will find refreshment for yourselves.00:18:38
00:18:39
For my yoke is kindly,00:18:42
00:18:42
and my load is light.00:18:45
00:19:13
Now one of the Pharisees00:19:14
00:19:14
kept asking him to dine with him.00:19:16
00:19:20
So he entered the house of the Pharisee00:19:23
00:19:23
and reclined at the table.00:19:25
00:19:27
And look! a woman who was known in the city00:19:31
00:19:31
to be a sinner learned that he was dining00:19:33
00:19:33
in the house of the Pharisee,00:19:35
00:19:38
and she brought an alabaster jar00:19:40
00:19:40
of perfumed oil.00:19:41
00:20:07
Taking a position behind him at his feet,00:20:09
00:20:12
she wept00:20:14
00:20:16
and began to wet his feet with her tears,00:20:19
00:20:25
and she wiped them off00:20:26
00:20:26
with the hair of her head.00:20:28
00:20:32
Also, she tenderly kissed his feet00:20:36
00:20:44
and poured the perfumed oil on them.00:20:46
00:20:50
Seeing this,00:20:52
00:20:52
the Pharisee who had invited him said to himself:00:20:55
00:20:57
If this man were really a prophet,00:21:01
00:21:02
he would know who00:21:03
00:21:03
and what kind of woman it is00:21:06
00:21:06
who is touching him,00:21:08
00:21:10
that she is a sinner.00:21:12
00:21:22
Simon,00:21:24
00:21:27
I have something to say to you.00:21:29
00:21:31
Teacher, say it!00:21:34
00:21:40
Two men were debtors to a certain lender;00:21:43
00:21:45
the one was in debt for 500 denarii,00:21:48
00:21:50
but the other for 50.00:21:51
00:21:55
When they did not have anything00:21:56
00:21:56
to pay him back with,00:21:58
00:22:00
he freely forgave them both.00:22:03
00:22:04
Therefore,00:22:05
00:22:06
which one of them will love him more?00:22:09
00:22:12
I suppose it is the one whom he forgave more.00:22:16
00:22:20
You judged correctly.00:22:22
00:22:28
Do you see this woman?00:22:30
00:22:33
I entered your house;00:22:34
00:22:36
you gave me no water for my feet.00:22:38
00:22:42
But this woman wet my feet with her tears00:22:46
00:22:48
and wiped them off with her hair.00:22:50
00:22:51
You gave me no kiss,00:22:53
00:22:54
but this woman, from the hour that I came in,00:22:59
00:22:59
did not stop tenderly kissing my feet.00:23:02
00:23:03
You did not pour oil on my head,00:23:05
00:23:07
but this woman00:23:09
00:23:09
poured perfumed oil on my feet.00:23:13
00:23:18
Because of this, I tell you,00:23:21
00:23:23
her sins,00:23:24
00:23:28
many though they are, are forgiven,00:23:32
00:23:37
because she loved much.00:23:39
00:23:50
But the one who is forgiven little,00:23:52
00:23:54
loves little.00:23:56
00:24:16
Your sins are forgiven.00:24:20
00:24:27
Who is this man who even forgives sins?00:24:29
00:24:44
Your faith has saved you;00:24:47
00:25:02
go in peace.00:25:04
00:25:53
Shortly afterward00:25:54
00:25:56
he traveled from city to city00:25:58
00:26:02
and from village to village,00:26:04
00:26:10
preaching and declaring00:26:12
00:26:12
the good news of the Kingdom of God.00:26:14
00:26:15
And the Twelve were with him,00:26:17
00:26:19
as were certain women who had been cured00:26:21
00:26:21
of wicked spirits and sicknesses:00:26:23
00:26:25
Mary who was called Magdalene,00:26:28
00:26:29
from whom seven demons had come out;00:26:31
00:26:35
Joanna the wife of Chuza,00:26:39
00:26:39
Herod’s man in charge;00:26:41
00:26:52
Susanna;00:26:54
00:27:01
and many other women,00:27:03
00:27:03
who were ministering to them00:27:05
00:27:05
from their belongings.00:27:06
00:27:32
Then he went into a house,00:27:34
00:27:36
and again the crowd gathered,00:27:38
00:27:41
so that they were not able00:27:43
00:27:43
even to eat a meal.00:27:44
00:27:49
Then they brought him00:27:50
00:27:50
a demon-possessed man00:27:53
00:27:53
who was blind and speechless,00:27:55
00:28:21
and he cured him,00:28:22
00:28:22
so that the speechless man00:28:23
00:28:23
could speak and see.00:28:26
00:28:27
Well, all the crowds were astounded.00:28:29
00:28:33
May this not perhaps be the Son of David?00:28:37
00:28:47
This fellow does not expel the demons00:28:50
00:28:50
except by means of Beelzebub,00:28:52
00:28:52
the ruler of the demons.00:28:54
00:28:55
Knowing their thoughts,00:28:57
00:28:59
he said to them:00:29:02
00:29:02
Every kingdom divided against itself00:29:05
00:29:05
comes to ruin,00:29:06
00:29:07
and every city or house00:29:09
00:29:09
divided against itself will not stand.00:29:11
00:29:15
In the same way,00:29:17
00:29:17
if Satan expels Satan,00:29:19
00:29:20
he has become divided against himself;00:29:22
00:29:25
how, then, will his kingdom stand?00:29:27
00:29:29
Moreover,00:29:31
00:29:31
if I expel the demons by means of Beelzebub,00:29:34
00:29:34
by whom do your sons expel them?00:29:37
00:29:39
This is why they will be your judges.00:29:42
00:29:42
But if it is by means00:29:43
00:29:43
of God’s spirit that I expel the demons,00:29:46
00:29:46
the Kingdom of God has really overtaken you.00:29:49
00:29:51
Or how can anyone invade the house00:29:53
00:29:53
of a strong man and seize his possessions00:29:56
00:29:56
unless he first ties up the strong man?00:29:59
00:29:59
Only then can he plunder his house.00:30:02
00:30:04
Whoever is not on my side00:30:06
00:30:06
is against me,00:30:08
00:30:08
and whoever does not gather with me scatters.00:30:11
00:30:12
For this reason I say to you,00:30:15
00:30:15
every sort of sin and blasphemy00:30:18
00:30:18
will be forgiven men,00:30:21
00:30:21
but the blasphemy against the spirit00:30:23
00:30:23
will not be forgiven.00:30:25
00:30:26
For example,00:30:28
00:30:28
whoever speaks a word against the Son of man,00:30:31
00:30:32
it will be forgiven him;00:30:33
00:30:35
but whoever speaks against the holy spirit,00:30:38
00:30:40
it will not be forgiven him,00:30:41
00:30:42
no, not in this00:30:44
00:30:44
system of things nor in that to come.00:30:46
00:30:59
Either you make the tree fine00:31:02
00:31:02
and its fruit fine00:31:03
00:31:03
or make the tree rotten and its fruit rotten,00:31:05
00:31:07
for by its fruit the tree is known.00:31:09
00:31:14
Offspring of vipers,00:31:16
00:31:18
how can you speak good things00:31:19
00:31:19
when you are wicked?00:31:21
00:31:21
For out of the abundance of the heart00:31:23
00:31:23
the mouth speaks.00:31:25
00:31:26
The good man00:31:28
00:31:28
out of his good treasure00:31:29
00:31:29
sends out good things,00:31:31
00:31:31
whereas the wicked man00:31:33
00:31:33
out of his wicked treasure00:31:34
00:31:34
sends out wicked things.00:31:36
00:31:37
I tell you00:31:38
00:31:38
that men will render an account00:31:40
00:31:40
on Judgment Day00:31:41
00:31:41
for every unprofitable saying that they speak; 00:31:44
00:31:45
for by your words00:31:47
00:31:47
you will be declared righteous,00:31:49
00:31:49
and by your words you will be condemned.00:31:51
00:32:09
Teacher, we want to see a sign from you.00:32:13
00:32:20
A wicked and adulterous generation00:32:23
00:32:23
keeps on seeking a sign,00:32:26
00:32:29
but no sign will be given it00:32:32
00:32:32
except the sign of Jonah the prophet.00:32:35
00:32:35
For just as Jonah00:32:37
00:32:37
was in the belly of the huge fish00:32:39
00:32:39
for three days and three nights,00:32:42
00:32:42
so the Son of man00:32:44
00:32:44
will be in the heart of the earth00:32:46
00:32:46
for three days and three nights.00:32:48
00:32:52
Men of Nineveh will rise up in the judgment 00:32:55
00:32:55
with this generation and will condemn it,00:32:58
00:32:59
because they repented at what Jonah preached.00:33:02
00:33:03
But look! something more than Jonah is here.00:33:07
00:33:09
The queen of the south will be raised up00:33:11
00:33:11
in the judgment with this generation00:33:13
00:33:13
and will condemn it,00:33:15
00:33:15
for she came from the ends of the earth00:33:17
00:33:17
to hear the wisdom of Solomon.00:33:19
00:33:19
But look!00:33:21
00:33:21
something more than Solomon is here.00:33:24
00:33:30
When an unclean spirit comes out of a man,00:33:35
00:33:35
it passes through waterless places in search00:33:38
00:33:38
of a resting-place and finds none.00:33:41
00:33:43
Then it says, “I will go00:33:45
00:33:45
back to my house from which I moved,”00:33:47
00:33:51
and on arriving, it finds the house00:33:54
00:33:54
unoccupied but swept clean and adorned.00:33:57
00:33:59
Then it goes and takes along with it00:34:02
00:34:02
seven different spirits00:34:04
00:34:04
more wicked than itself,00:34:06
00:34:07
and after getting inside, they dwell there;00:34:11
00:34:12
and the final circumstances of that man00:34:15
00:34:15
become worse than the first.00:34:17
00:34:22
That is how it will be also00:34:24
00:34:24
with this wicked generation.00:34:27
00:34:45
But when his relatives heard about it,00:34:48
00:34:48
they went out to seize him,00:34:50
00:34:50
for they were saying:00:34:52
00:34:52
“He has gone out of his mind.”00:34:55
00:35:22
Look!00:35:23
00:35:23
Your mother and your brothers00:35:25
00:35:25
are standing outside,00:35:27
00:35:27
seeking to speak to you.00:35:30
00:35:41
Who is my mother,00:35:43
00:35:43
and who are my brothers?00:35:45
00:35:48
Look!00:35:50
00:35:50
My mother and my brothers!00:35:52
00:35:53
For whoever does the will 00:35:55
00:35:55
of my Father who is in heaven,00:35:56
00:35:56
that one is my brother00:36:00
00:36:00
and sister and mother.00:36:02
00:36:13
On that day Jesus left the house00:36:16
00:36:16
and was sitting by the sea.00:36:18
00:36:22
And such large crowds gathered to him00:36:24
00:36:26
that he went aboard a boat and sat down,00:36:29
00:36:29
and all the crowd was standing on the beach.00:36:32
00:36:35
Then00:36:37
00:36:37
he told them many things by illustrations.00:36:40
00:36:41
Look!00:36:42
00:36:42
A sower went out to sow.00:36:44
00:36:44
As he was sowing,00:36:47
00:36:47
some seeds fell alongside the road,00:36:50
00:36:50
and the birds came and ate them up.00:36:52
00:36:54
Others fell on rocky ground00:36:57
00:36:57
where there was not much soil,00:36:58
00:37:00
and they immediately sprang up00:37:01
00:37:01
because the soil was not deep.00:37:03
00:37:04
But when the sun rose,00:37:06
00:37:06
they were scorched,00:37:09
00:37:09
and they withered because they had no root.00:37:12
00:37:14
Others fell among the thorns,00:37:17
00:37:17
and the thorns came up and choked them.00:37:19
00:37:21
Still others fell on the fine soil,00:37:24
00:37:25
and they began to yield fruit,00:37:27
00:37:29
this one 100 times more,00:37:31
00:37:31
that one 60, the other 30.00:37:34
00:37:36
Let the one who has ears listen.00:37:40
00:38:37
So the disciples came and said to him:00:38:40
00:38:43
Why do you speak to them00:38:44
00:38:44
by the use of illustrations?00:38:46
00:38:51
To you it is granted to understand00:38:54
00:38:54
the sacred secrets of the Kingdom of the heavens,00:38:56
00:39:01
but to them it is not granted.00:39:03
00:39:04
For whoever has, more will be given him,00:39:07
00:39:07
and he will be made to abound;00:39:09
00:39:10
but whoever does not have,00:39:12
00:39:13
even what he has will be taken from him.00:39:16
00:39:20
That is why I speak to them00:39:21
00:39:21
by the use of illustrations;00:39:23
00:39:26
for looking, they look in vain,00:39:28
00:39:28
and hearing, they hear in vain,00:39:29
00:39:31
nor do they get the sense of it.00:39:33
00:39:36
And the prophecy of Isaiah00:39:37
00:39:37
is being fulfilled in their case.00:39:40
00:39:40
It says: “You will indeed hear00:39:42
00:39:42
“but by no means get the sense of it,00:39:46
00:39:46
“and you will indeed look but by no means see.00:39:48
00:39:54
“For the heart of this people00:39:57
00:39:57
“has grown unreceptive,00:39:59
00:40:04
“and with their ears they have heard without response,00:40:07
00:40:08
“and they have shut their eyes,00:40:10
00:40:10
“so that they might never see with their eyes00:40:13
00:40:13
“and hear with their ears00:40:14
00:40:14
“and get the sense of it with their hearts00:40:16
00:40:16
and turn back and I heal them.”00:40:19
00:40:24
However,00:40:25
00:40:27
happy are your eyes because they see00:40:30
00:40:30
and your ears because they hear.00:40:34
00:40:34
For truly I say to you,00:40:36
00:40:36
many prophets and righteous men00:40:38
00:40:38
desired to see the things you are observing00:40:41
00:40:41
but did not see them,00:40:43
00:40:44
and to hear the things you are hearing00:40:46
00:40:46
but did not hear them.00:40:48
00:40:54
Now00:40:55
00:40:55
listen to the illustration of the man who sowed.00:40:58
00:41:05
Where anyone hears the word of the Kingdom00:41:07
00:41:07
but does not get the sense of it,00:41:10
00:41:10
the wicked one comes and snatches away00:41:14
00:41:14
what has been sown in his heart;00:41:16
00:41:18
this is the one sown alongside the road.00:41:21
00:41:23
As for the one sown on rocky ground,00:41:26
00:41:26
this is the one hearing the word00:41:28
00:41:28
and at once accepting it with joy.00:41:31
00:41:33
Yet, he has no root in himself00:41:35
00:41:36
but continues for a time,00:41:38
00:41:38
and after tribulation00:41:40
00:41:40
or persecution has arisen00:41:42
00:41:42
on account of the word,00:41:44
00:41:45
he is at once stumbled.00:41:48
00:41:49
As for the one sown among the thorns,00:41:52
00:41:52
this is the one hearing the word,00:41:54
00:41:54
but the anxiety of this system of things00:41:58
00:41:58
and the deceptive power of riches00:42:01
00:42:01
choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.00:42:04
00:42:06
As for the one sown upon the fine soil,00:42:09
00:42:09
This is the one hearing the word00:42:11
00:42:11
and getting the sense of it,00:42:13
00:42:14
who really does bear fruit and produces,00:42:18
00:42:18
this one 100 times more,00:42:20
00:42:20
that one 60,00:42:21
00:42:21
the other 30.00:42:23
00:42:28
The Kingdom of the heavens00:42:29
00:42:29
may be likened to a man who sowed00:42:32
00:42:32
fine seed in his field.00:42:34
00:42:35
While men were sleeping,00:42:36
00:42:36
his enemy came and oversowed00:42:39
00:42:39
weeds in among the wheat and left.00:42:42
00:42:44
When the stalk sprouted and produced fruit,00:42:47
00:42:48
then the weeds also appeared.00:42:50
00:42:51
So the slaves of the master of the house00:42:53
00:42:53
came and said to him,00:42:56
00:42:56
“Master,00:42:58
00:42:58
“did you not sow fine seed in your field?00:43:00
00:43:01
How, then, does it have weeds?”00:43:03
00:43:03
He said to them, “An enemy, a man, did this.”00:43:08
00:43:09
The slaves said to him,00:43:11
00:43:11
“Do you want us, then, to go out and collect them?”00:43:14
00:43:15
He said, “No,00:43:16
00:43:18
“for fear that while collecting the weeds,00:43:20
00:43:20
“you uproot the wheat with them.00:43:22
00:43:23
“Let both grow together until the harvest,00:43:27
00:43:27
“and in the harvest season,00:43:29
00:43:29
“I will tell the reapers:00:43:31
00:43:31
“First collect the weeds00:43:33
00:43:33
“and bind them in bundles00:43:35
00:43:35
“to burn them up; 00:43:36
00:43:38
then gather the wheat into my storehouse.”00:43:41
00:43:49
The Kingdom of the heavens00:43:50
00:43:52
is like a mustard grain that a man took00:43:55
00:43:55
and planted in his field.00:43:57
00:43:57
It is, in fact, the tiniest of all the seeds,00:44:00
00:44:02
but when it has grown, it is the largest00:44:04
00:44:04
of the vegetable plants00:44:06
00:44:06
and becomes a tree,00:44:08
00:44:08
so that the birds of heaven come00:44:10
00:44:10
and find lodging among its branches.00:44:12
00:44:17
The Kingdom of the heavens is like leaven00:44:20
00:44:20
that a woman took and mixed with three large measures00:44:23
00:44:23
of flour00:44:24
00:44:31
until the whole mass was fermented.00:44:34
00:44:46
All these things Jesus spoke00:44:48
00:44:48
to the crowds by illustrations.00:44:49
00:44:55
Indeed,00:44:56
00:44:56
without an illustration00:44:58
00:44:58
he would not speak to them,00:45:00
00:45:00
in order to fulfill what was spoken00:45:02
00:45:02
through the prophet who said:00:45:04
00:45:04
“I will open my mouth with illustrations;00:45:09
00:45:09
I will proclaim things hidden since the founding.”00:45:12
00:45:23
Then after dismissing the crowds,00:45:25
00:45:25
he went into the house.00:45:27
00:45:37
His disciples came to him and said:00:45:39
00:45:40
Explain to us the illustration of the weeds in the field.00:45:44
00:45:52
The sower of the fine seed00:45:55
00:45:55
is the Son of man;00:45:57
00:45:59
the field is the world.00:46:02
00:46:02
As for the fine seed,00:46:04
00:46:04
these are the sons of the Kingdom,00:46:06
00:46:06
but the weeds00:46:08
00:46:08
are the sons of the wicked one,00:46:11
00:46:11
and the enemy who sowed them is the Devil.00:46:14
00:46:16
The harvest is a conclusion of a system of things,00:46:19
00:46:19
and the reapers are angels.00:46:22
00:46:23
Therefore,00:46:25
00:46:25
just as the weeds are collected00:46:27
00:46:27
and burned with fire,00:46:30
00:46:30
so it will be in the conclusion of the system of things.00:46:32
00:46:34
The Son of man will send his angels,00:46:36
00:46:37
and they will collect out from his Kingdom00:46:39
00:46:39
all things that cause stumbling00:46:41
00:46:41
and people who practice lawlessness,00:46:44
00:46:45
and they will pitch them into the fiery furnace.00:46:47
00:46:48
There is where their weeping00:46:50
00:46:50
and the gnashing of their teeth will be.00:46:52
00:46:58

Episode 6: “Are You the Coming One?”
-
Episode 6: “Are You the Coming One?”
When he had completed
what he had to say to the people,
he entered Capernaum.
Now an army officer’s slave,
who was dear to him,
was seriously ill and about to pass away.
When he heard about Jesus,
he sent some elders of the Jews to him
to ask him to come and make his slave well.
They came up to Jesus and began to plead
with him earnestly.
He is worthy of your granting him this,
for he loves our nation
and he himself built our synagogue.
So Jesus went with them.
But when he was not far from the house,
the army officer had already sent friends
to say to him:
Sir, do not bother,
for I am not worthy to have you
come under my roof.
That is why I did not consider myself
worthy to come to you.
But say the word,
and let my servant be healed.
For I too am a man placed under authority,
having soldiers under me, . . .
. . . and I say to this one,
“Go!” and he goes,
and to another, “Come!” and he comes, . . .
. . . and to my slave,
“Do this!”
and he does it.
When Jesus heard that,
he was amazed
and said to those following him:
I tell you the truth,
with no one in Israel have I found
so great a faith.
But I tell you
that many from east and west will come
and recline at the table
with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob
in the Kingdom of the heavens;
whereas the sons of the Kingdom
will be thrown into the darkness outside.
There is where their weeping
and the gnashing of their teeth will be.
Go.
Just as you have shown faith,
so let it come to pass for you.
Master!
And the servant was healed in that hour.
And when those
who had been sent returned to the house,
they found the slave in good health.
Soon afterward
he traveled to a city called Nain,
and his disciples
and a large crowd were traveling with him.
As he got near the gate of the city,
why look!
there was a dead man being carried out,
the only son of his mother.
Besides, she was a widow.
A considerable crowd from the city
was also with her.
When the Lord caught sight of her,
he was moved with pity for her.
Stop weeping.
With that he approached and touched the bier,
and the bearers stood still.
Young man, I say to you, get up!
And the dead man sat up
and started to speak, . . .
What has happened?
Oh, oh, oh, my boy!
Oh, oh, my boy!
My boy—alive!
My boy—alive!
. . . and Jesus gave him to his mother.
Now fear seized them all,
and they began to glorify God,
saying: “A great prophet has been
raised up among us,”
and, “God has turned
his attention to his people.”
And this news concerning him
spread out into all Judea
and all the surrounding country.
Now John’s disciples reported to him
all these things.
So John summoned two of his disciples
and sent them to the Lord to ask:
Are you the Coming One,
or are we to expect a different one?
When they came to him, the men said:
John the Baptist sent us to you to ask,
“Are you the Coming One,
or are we to expect another?”
In that hour
he cured many people of sicknesses,
serious diseases, and wicked spirits,
and he granted many blind people
the gift of sight.
Go and report to John
what you have seen and heard:
The blind are now seeing,
the lame are walking,
the lepers are being cleansed,
the deaf are hearing,
the dead are being raised up,
and the poor are being told the good news.
Happy is the one
who finds no cause for stumbling in me.
When the messengers of John had gone away,
Jesus began to speak
to the crowds about John:
What did you go out
into the wilderness to see?
A reed being tossed by the wind?
What, then, did you go out to see?
A man dressed in soft garments?
Why, those wearing splendid dress
and living in luxury
are in royal houses.
Really, then, what did you go out to see?
A prophet?
Yes, I tell you, and far more than a prophet.
This is the one about whom it is written:
“Look! I am sending my messenger
“ahead of you,
who will prepare your way ahead of you.”
See, the Lamb of God.
I tell you, among those born of women
there is no one greater than John,
but a lesser person in the Kingdom of God
is greater than he is.
From the days of John the Baptist
until now, the Kingdom of the heavens
is the goal toward which men press,
and those pressing forward are seizing it.
For all,
the Prophets and the Law,
prophesied until John;
and if you are willing to accept it, he is
“Elijah who is to come.”
Let the one who has ears listen.
(When all the people
(and the tax collectors heard this,
(they declared God to be righteous,
(for they had been baptized
(with the baptism of John.
(But the Pharisees
(and those versed in the Law
(disregarded the counsel of God to them,
since they had not been baptized by him.)
With whom will I compare this generation?
It is like young children
sitting in the marketplaces
who call out to their playmates, saying:
“We played the flute for you,
“but you did not dance;
“we wailed,
but you did not beat yourselves in grief.”
Likewise,
John came neither eating nor drinking,
but people say, “He has a demon.”
The Son of man did come eating and drinking,
but people say, “Look!
“A man who is a glutton
“and is given to drinking wine,
a friend of tax collectors and sinners.”
All the same,
wisdom is proved righteous by its works.
Then he began to reproach the cities
in which most of his powerful works
had taken place,
for they did not repent:
Woe to you, Chorazin!
Woe to you, Bethsaida!
because if the powerful works
that took place in you
had taken place in Tyre and Sidon,
they would long ago
have repented in sackcloth and ashes.
But I say to you, it will be more endurable
for Tyre and Sidon on Judgment Day
than for you.
And you, Capernaum,
will you perhaps be exalted to heaven?
Down to the Grave you will come;
because if the powerful works that took place in you
had taken place in Sodom,
it would have remained until this very day.
But I say to you,
it will be more endurable for the land
of Sodom on Judgment Day than for you.
I publicly praise you, Father,
Lord of heaven and earth,
because you have hidden these things
from the wise and intellectual ones
and have revealed them to young children.
Yes, O Father,
because this is the way you approved.
All things
have been handed over to me by my Father,
and no one fully knows the Son
except the Father;
neither does anyone fully know the Father
except the Son
and anyone
to whom the Son is willing to reveal him.
Come to me,
all you who are toiling and loaded down,
and I will refresh you.
Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,
for I am mild-tempered and lowly in heart,
and you will find refreshment for yourselves.
For my yoke is kindly,
and my load is light.
Now one of the Pharisees
kept asking him to dine with him.
So he entered the house of the Pharisee
and reclined at the table.
And look! a woman who was known in the city
to be a sinner learned that he was dining
in the house of the Pharisee,
and she brought an alabaster jar
of perfumed oil.
Taking a position behind him at his feet,
she wept
and began to wet his feet with her tears,
and she wiped them off
with the hair of her head.
Also, she tenderly kissed his feet
and poured the perfumed oil on them.
Seeing this,
the Pharisee who had invited him said to himself:
If this man were really a prophet,
he would know who
and what kind of woman it is
who is touching him,
that she is a sinner.
Simon,
I have something to say to you.
Teacher, say it!
Two men were debtors to a certain lender;
the one was in debt for 500 denarii,
but the other for 50.
When they did not have anything
to pay him back with,
he freely forgave them both.
Therefore,
which one of them will love him more?
I suppose it is the one whom he forgave more.
You judged correctly.
Do you see this woman?
I entered your house;
you gave me no water for my feet.
But this woman wet my feet with her tears
and wiped them off with her hair.
You gave me no kiss,
but this woman, from the hour that I came in,
did not stop tenderly kissing my feet.
You did not pour oil on my head,
but this woman
poured perfumed oil on my feet.
Because of this, I tell you,
her sins,
many though they are, are forgiven,
because she loved much.
But the one who is forgiven little,
loves little.
Your sins are forgiven.
Who is this man who even forgives sins?
Your faith has saved you;
go in peace.
Shortly afterward
he traveled from city to city
and from village to village,
preaching and declaring
the good news of the Kingdom of God.
And the Twelve were with him,
as were certain women who had been cured
of wicked spirits and sicknesses:
Mary who was called Magdalene,
from whom seven demons had come out;
Joanna the wife of Chuza,
Herod’s man in charge;
Susanna;
and many other women,
who were ministering to them
from their belongings.
Then he went into a house,
and again the crowd gathered,
so that they were not able
even to eat a meal.
Then they brought him
a demon-possessed man
who was blind and speechless,
and he cured him,
so that the speechless man
could speak and see.
Well, all the crowds were astounded.
May this not perhaps be the Son of David?
This fellow does not expel the demons
except by means of Beelzebub,
the ruler of the demons.
Knowing their thoughts,
he said to them:
Every kingdom divided against itself
comes to ruin,
and every city or house
divided against itself will not stand.
In the same way,
if Satan expels Satan,
he has become divided against himself;
how, then, will his kingdom stand?
Moreover,
if I expel the demons by means of Beelzebub,
by whom do your sons expel them?
This is why they will be your judges.
But if it is by means
of God’s spirit that I expel the demons,
the Kingdom of God has really overtaken you.
Or how can anyone invade the house
of a strong man and seize his possessions
unless he first ties up the strong man?
Only then can he plunder his house.
Whoever is not on my side
is against me,
and whoever does not gather with me scatters.
For this reason I say to you,
every sort of sin and blasphemy
will be forgiven men,
but the blasphemy against the spirit
will not be forgiven.
For example,
whoever speaks a word against the Son of man,
it will be forgiven him;
but whoever speaks against the holy spirit,
it will not be forgiven him,
no, not in this
system of things nor in that to come.
Either you make the tree fine
and its fruit fine
or make the tree rotten and its fruit rotten,
for by its fruit the tree is known.
Offspring of vipers,
how can you speak good things
when you are wicked?
For out of the abundance of the heart
the mouth speaks.
The good man
out of his good treasure
sends out good things,
whereas the wicked man
out of his wicked treasure
sends out wicked things.
I tell you
that men will render an account
on Judgment Day
for every unprofitable saying that they speak;
for by your words
you will be declared righteous,
and by your words you will be condemned.
Teacher, we want to see a sign from you.
A wicked and adulterous generation
keeps on seeking a sign,
but no sign will be given it
except the sign of Jonah the prophet.
For just as Jonah
was in the belly of the huge fish
for three days and three nights,
so the Son of man
will be in the heart of the earth
for three days and three nights.
Men of Nineveh will rise up in the judgment
with this generation and will condemn it,
because they repented at what Jonah preached.
But look! something more than Jonah is here.
The queen of the south will be raised up
in the judgment with this generation
and will condemn it,
for she came from the ends of the earth
to hear the wisdom of Solomon.
But look!
something more than Solomon is here.
When an unclean spirit comes out of a man,
it passes through waterless places in search
of a resting-place and finds none.
Then it says, “I will go
back to my house from which I moved,”
and on arriving, it finds the house
unoccupied but swept clean and adorned.
Then it goes and takes along with it
seven different spirits
more wicked than itself,
and after getting inside, they dwell there;
and the final circumstances of that man
become worse than the first.
That is how it will be also
with this wicked generation.
But when his relatives heard about it,
they went out to seize him,
for they were saying:
“He has gone out of his mind.”
Look!
Your mother and your brothers
are standing outside,
seeking to speak to you.
Who is my mother,
and who are my brothers?
Look!
My mother and my brothers!
For whoever does the will
of my Father who is in heaven,
that one is my brother
and sister and mother.
On that day Jesus left the house
and was sitting by the sea.
And such large crowds gathered to him
that he went aboard a boat and sat down,
and all the crowd was standing on the beach.
Then
he told them many things by illustrations.
Look!
A sower went out to sow.
As he was sowing,
some seeds fell alongside the road,
and the birds came and ate them up.
Others fell on rocky ground
where there was not much soil,
and they immediately sprang up
because the soil was not deep.
But when the sun rose,
they were scorched,
and they withered because they had no root.
Others fell among the thorns,
and the thorns came up and choked them.
Still others fell on the fine soil,
and they began to yield fruit,
this one 100 times more,
that one 60, the other 30.
Let the one who has ears listen.
So the disciples came and said to him:
Why do you speak to them
by the use of illustrations?
To you it is granted to understand
the sacred secrets of the Kingdom of the heavens,
but to them it is not granted.
For whoever has, more will be given him,
and he will be made to abound;
but whoever does not have,
even what he has will be taken from him.
That is why I speak to them
by the use of illustrations;
for looking, they look in vain,
and hearing, they hear in vain,
nor do they get the sense of it.
And the prophecy of Isaiah
is being fulfilled in their case.
It says: “You will indeed hear
“but by no means get the sense of it,
“and you will indeed look but by no means see.
“For the heart of this people
“has grown unreceptive,
“and with their ears they have heard without response,
“and they have shut their eyes,
“so that they might never see with their eyes
“and hear with their ears
“and get the sense of it with their hearts
and turn back and I heal them.”
However,
happy are your eyes because they see
and your ears because they hear.
For truly I say to you,
many prophets and righteous men
desired to see the things you are observing
but did not see them,
and to hear the things you are hearing
but did not hear them.
Now
listen to the illustration of the man who sowed.
Where anyone hears the word of the Kingdom
but does not get the sense of it,
the wicked one comes and snatches away
what has been sown in his heart;
this is the one sown alongside the road.
As for the one sown on rocky ground,
this is the one hearing the word
and at once accepting it with joy.
Yet, he has no root in himself
but continues for a time,
and after tribulation
or persecution has arisen
on account of the word,
he is at once stumbled.
As for the one sown among the thorns,
this is the one hearing the word,
but the anxiety of this system of things
and the deceptive power of riches
choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.
As for the one sown upon the fine soil,
This is the one hearing the word
and getting the sense of it,
who really does bear fruit and produces,
this one 100 times more,
that one 60,
the other 30.
The Kingdom of the heavens
may be likened to a man who sowed
fine seed in his field.
While men were sleeping,
his enemy came and oversowed
weeds in among the wheat and left.
When the stalk sprouted and produced fruit,
then the weeds also appeared.
So the slaves of the master of the house
came and said to him,
“Master,
“did you not sow fine seed in your field?
How, then, does it have weeds?”
He said to them, “An enemy, a man, did this.”
The slaves said to him,
“Do you want us, then, to go out and collect them?”
He said, “No,
“for fear that while collecting the weeds,
“you uproot the wheat with them.
“Let both grow together until the harvest,
“and in the harvest season,
“I will tell the reapers:
“First collect the weeds
“and bind them in bundles
“to burn them up;
then gather the wheat into my storehouse.”
The Kingdom of the heavens
is like a mustard grain that a man took
and planted in his field.
It is, in fact, the tiniest of all the seeds,
but when it has grown, it is the largest
of the vegetable plants
and becomes a tree,
so that the birds of heaven come
and find lodging among its branches.
The Kingdom of the heavens is like leaven
that a woman took and mixed with three large measures
of flour
until the whole mass was fermented.
All these things Jesus spoke
to the crowds by illustrations.
Indeed,
without an illustration
he would not speak to them,
in order to fulfill what was spoken
through the prophet who said:
“I will open my mouth with illustrations;
I will proclaim things hidden since the founding.”
Then after dismissing the crowds,
he went into the house.
His disciples came to him and said:
Explain to us the illustration of the weeds in the field.
The sower of the fine seed
is the Son of man;
the field is the world.
As for the fine seed,
these are the sons of the Kingdom,
but the weeds
are the sons of the wicked one,
and the enemy who sowed them is the Devil.
The harvest is a conclusion of a system of things,
and the reapers are angels.
Therefore,
just as the weeds are collected
and burned with fire,
so it will be in the conclusion of the system of things.
The Son of man will send his angels,
and they will collect out from his Kingdom
all things that cause stumbling
and people who practice lawlessness,
and they will pitch them into the fiery furnace.
There is where their weeping
and the gnashing of their teeth will be.
At that time the righteous ones
will shine as brightly as the sun
in the Kingdom of their Father.
Let the one who has ears listen.
The Kingdom of the heavens
is like a treasure, hidden in the field,
that a man found and hid;
and because of his joy,
he goes and sells everything he has
and buys that field.
Again the Kingdom of the heavens
is like a traveling merchant
seeking fine pearls.
Upon finding one pearl of high value,
he went away
and promptly sold all the things he had
and bought it.
Again
the Kingdom of the heavens is like a dragnet
let down into the sea
and gathering fish of every kind.
When it was full,
they hauled it up onto the beach,
and sitting down,
they collected the fine ones into containers,
but the unsuitable they threw away.
That is how it will be
in the conclusion of the system of things.
The angels will go out and separate
the wicked from among the righteous
and will cast them into the fiery furnace.
There is where their weeping
and the gnashing of their teeth will be.
Did you get the sense of all these things?
Yes.
That being the case,
every public instructor
who is taught about the Kingdom of the heavens
is like a man, the master of the house,
who brings out of his treasure store
things both new and old.
When Jesus had finished these illustrations,
he departed from there.
