Messianic Prophecy Fulfilled!—Descended From King David and Anointed as “Messiah the Leader”

Video Other languages Share text Share link Show times

Thousands of years before Jesus’ birth,
Messianic prophecy,
beginning with Genesis 3:15,
foretold his role as the Messiah
—the coming offspring
who would accomplish Jehovah’s purpose.
The Bible books of Matthew and Luke
provide a genealogy
that allows us to trace Jesus’ lineage
from Adam
to the faithful patriarch Abraham,
through whom God promised
that the Messiah would descend.
As time passed,
the prophets continued
to bear witness to Jesus,
revealing further truths about his lineage.
The Messiah would descend through King David.
Luke traces Jesus’ natural descent
through David’s son Nathan
down to his mother, Mary.
Matthew, on the other hand,
traces Jesus’ legal right
to the throne of David
through Solomon
down to his adoptive father, Joseph.
Jesus’ genealogy fulfilled a prophecy
spanning hundreds of years,
giving us confidence
that he is the promised Messiah.
More than five hundred years
before Jesus’ birth,
the angel Gabriel
revealed the exact timing
of the arrival of the Messiah
to the prophet Daniel.
Jehovah’s angel told Daniel:
“From the issuing of the word
to restore and to rebuild Jerusalem
“until Messiah the Leader,
there will be 7 weeks, also 62 weeks”
—a total of 69 weeks.
Sixty-nine weeks is 483 days.
“The word to . . . rebuild Jerusalem”
was given in the year 455 B.C.E.
This marked the beginning of the 69 weeks.
However, the Messiah
did not appear 483 days later.
But if we apply the Scriptural formula
of “a day for a year”
and count forward 483 years
instead of days,
that brings us from 455 B.C.E.
to 29 C.E.
The Bible indicates
that Jesus was baptized in the year 29 C.E.
and was anointed by holy spirit
as the Messiah.
The fulfilled prophecy
of Daniel chapter 9
strengthens our faith in the Bible,
in Jesus as the foretold Messiah,
and in Jehovah
as the Great Timekeeper.
