Can Truth Be Found? Interview With Queentela Abajuo

Growing up, going to church
was always part of our weekend routine.
However, we belonged
to different religious institutions
throughout my childhood
and even into my teenage years.
Something that made me
start to lose trust
in the churches that I was attending
was that the sermons always seemed
very theatrical, performative.
You would feel good,
but as soon as you’d leave,
you’d feel empty and you’d realize
that throughout the span of one hour,
the pastor had only used
two to three verses in an entire sermon.
There was hypocrisy in teaching,
and there was
this hyperfocus on materialism.
Also, there was lack of genuine love.
I felt that there had to be
a group of people out there
who were trying to align their lives
as closely as possible to the Bible.
I was originally hesitant to study the Bible
with Jehovah’s Witnesses.
I had my reservations
because, in my mind, I felt
that they had their own Bible
and perhaps they were a cult
and had some weird beliefs.
I actually made friends
with Witnesses in school,
and one day, one of them invited me
to my very first meeting.
And while I was originally hesitant
to actually go,
I decided to take them up on it.
And I noticed that the Bible
was highly emphasized.
It actually was
what was guiding the entire program.
And even when people
would give a comment,
they would integrate the Bible verses
into their comments.
Also, that was
where I met my Bible study teacher.
And through the course of my study,
I came to realize
that those misconceptions
were indeed misconceptions.
All the beliefs are based on the Bible
and documented on jw.org.
Nothing is a secret.
I thought that they used their own Bible,
but in my Bible study,
my teacher encouraged me
to use my own Bible.
Also, seeing the love
—I felt that in the congregation
that I belonged to.
I would travel places
and purposely visit different congregations
just to test out to see
if the love was the same
in every congregation.
And indeed it was!
I feel that Jehovah has finally brought me
to the path
that I’ve always been searching for.
